Zeelandia is
ready for a
titanium dioxide-free era

On 18 January 2022, the ban on the use of the additive E171 in foodstuffs in the EU was published in Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/63.

This regulation contains a ‘sell-out clause’. Until 7 August 2022, foods produced with E171 in accordance with the rules applicable before 7 February 2022 may continue to be placed on the market. After that date, they may remain on the market until their date of minimum durability or ‘use by’ date.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium, sourced from minerals. It is used in a wide range of goods, such as toothpaste, hygiene, and pharmaceutical products. Titanium dioxide was also widely used in the food industry as an additive (E171), because of its colour and opacifying properties. In the bakery, it has been used in e.g., water-based bakery fillings, instant custard mixes, and various white coverings.

For the last years, Zeelandia has been working on developing solutions without titanium dioxide. We are prepared with our technical solutions and we adapted and developed numerous products free of TiO2. We are able to offer solutions without the additive E171 well in time to assure compliance with the new EU legislation.
